Earlier today, the Governor-General of Australia His Excellency David Hurley officially awarded Nic Park with the 'Bravery Medal' – one of this country’s highest civilian honours - given where people selflessly put themselves in jeopardy to protect the lives of others (you may recognise him in the picture from volunteering with us at Silos Estate he is the good looking fellow on the right) At the risk of repeating ourselves, this is a story worth...well....repeating. In February 2021, at a beach near to us, three men were washed off the rocks while fishing. With no life vests, pounding seas and a heavy swell they were washed out hundreds of meters to sea within minutes. A passerby, Laines Niema (who also received a Bravery Medal today) dove into the water in an attempt to rescue one of the men, but with the swell sweeping over the rock platform and a steep rock face he too was also swept out to sea By this time, two police officers, Darren Traill and Matthew Elston arrived to help but were both injured in trying to help. Not scratches mind you – the surf was so strong they both suffered lacerations and broken bones when thrown onto the rocks This was the situation that confronted Nic when he arrived on scene, and in spite of this, he dived in and swam out to the fishermen. In these difficult conditions, and with the knowledge that these waters are well known for sharks – he was able to affect two rescues All three fishermen were bought to shore, and CPR was applied by paramedics and surf life rescue. Sadly, despite their best efforts, two of the fishermen did not survive In a world of ‘heroic’ sports stars; ‘brave’ actors; ‘courageous’ influencers and ‘fearless’ pop stars - Nic along with seven of our other fellow citizens are the real deal How lucky we are to have people like them, and in our case, Nic in our lives #honors #braverymedal #goodnews #shoalhaven #bravery
At Silos Estate we believe passionately in the power of education and love supporting our local schools: through hosting school excursions, offering work experience, providing venues for school events and staff offsites, and supporting P&Cs. Last night we were delighted to again (for the 10th year running!) host the Nowra Anglican College wine & cheese night, which is always a great way for staff and parents to get to know each other at the beginning of the school year. #education #schoolcommunity #community #workingtogether

Happy to call it. We have wondered for a while if this 'mob' had moved in - and we think now, after about three months of seeing them every day, we can safely say that they have. It’s the culmination of 16 years of work to know they now call this home - rehabilitating the broken down, degraded and invasives-infested land we bought in 2007. Home to wombats, echidnas, platypus, bearded dragons, snakes, countless species of birds and 1000's of new trees - we can now add a mob of 12 kangaroos (including 2 joeys!) #kangaroo #wildlifeplanet #australianwildlife #Environment #shoalhaven #fauna #silosestate
For the 16th year running, Silos Estate was delighted to sponsor the Berry Show, in its 136th year. Agriculture in Australia is forward facing - accounting for 11.2% of national exports (72% of production is exported): employing 2.5% of the population and producing over 3% of the world’s foodstuffs [ABS 2021/22]. Through research, innovation, passion and necessity we are also becoming one of the world’s most efficient and sustainable producers. What a thrill it is then for Silos Estate to be part of that group, and showcase in the most Australian of settings - the Berry Show. And a little sidebar. One of our team, Charlie Owen, was named the winner of the Berry Show Young Women’s Award for 2024. She goes on to represent our region in the Zone competition- and we wish her well. #agriculture #berry #unspoilt #wine #shoalhaven #community
